A crash that broke a power pole and busted a water main along Highway 98 in Destin early Saturday morning landed two people in jail on charges of DUI. Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the wreck in front of Boshamps Restaurant at 414 Harbor Boulevard around 12:30 a.m.

35-year old Aaron Ball of Tonkawa Oklahoma told deputies he was heading from AJ’S Bar to Miramar Beach and was texting a female friend while driving when he drifted off the road. He hit the power pole and two traffic signs and his car came to rest in the left eastbound lane with his headlights facing west.

Another driver, 36-year old Brian Buege was traveling from the Red Door Saloon on Harbor Boulevard towards his home on Pine Ridge Trace when he hit Ball’s car head on.

A witness says she had pulled Ball from his car and away from the impending collision. Following the investigation, Buege was charged with DUI and Ball was charged with DUI with property damage.

Damage to the power pole, water main, and traffic signs is estimated at $18,000.
