Sheriff’s Posse

The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Posse is a terrific bargain for the taxpayers of Okaloosa County.

Since 1995, Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office Posse Members have donated more than 114,000 hours to the citizens of Okaloosa County.  More than 50 civic-minded citizens donate their time to assist the Sheriff’s Office in a multitude of functions. Members of the Posse are trained by Florida’s Justice Standards and Training Commission (CJSTC) and they are certified as “Auxiliary Law Enforcement Officers” in accordance with standards established by the state of Florida. Members of the Posse wear uniforms similar to those of a Deputy and they are authorized to wear badges and carry firearms.

Posse members transport prisoners, assist in courtroom security, guard crime scenes, escort dignitaries, backup patrol deputies, provide security for festivals and other events, and perform many other important duties at virtually no cost to the Okaloosa County taxpayers. Some members of the Posse eventually enter law enforcement as a career field; many others have full-time jobs outside of law enforcement but while continuing to volunteer their time and talents to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office.
