On 04/29/2016 the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and 1st Judicial Medical Examiner’s Office have exhumed and recovered human remains at a residence at 714 Revere Avenue in Fort Walton Beach.

Law enforcement personnel were brought to this location on 04/28/2016 by 47-year old James Ty Flanders, who had been arrested in Arizona in May of last year and charged with second degree murder in connection to the 2011 disappearance of Marie Carlson. Yesterday, Flanders plead guilty to manslaughter in court after being interviewed by State Attorney William Eddins, a special prosecutor, and Sheriff’s Investigator. Flanders led personnel to the side yard of his former residence on Revere and indicated the area where he buried the body of Marie Carlson after he had killed her. The remains recovered were collected by the medical examiner’s office forfurther investigation and positive identification.

Marie Carlson was reportedly last seen on October 17, 2011 by Flanders, the father of her then newborn child, at the home on Revere Avenue that they shared with Flanders’s wife. Marie Carlson was later reported missing/endangered to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office on October 24, 2011 by her ex-husband, Jeff Carlson. Carlson, who resided in Kentucky with his and Marie’s 8 year old daughter, became concerned after being unable to make contact with Marie.

On October 19, 2011, a group text message, from Marie Carlson’s phone, was received by several people. The text message stated that she (Marie) had left Fort Walton Beach on October 18, 2011 to do something she had always wanted to do. The text did not contain any information as to what this was or where it was to be done. Receivers of this message included James Flanders, her ex-husband Jeff Carlson, and other family members and friends in the Fort Walton Beach area.

During his interview, James Flanders admitted to sending the group message from Marie’s phone. Marie’s vehicle was located at the Northwest Florida Regional Airport (NFRA) on October 21, 2011 by James Flanders. The initial investigation into Marie’s disappearance determined that she did not voluntarily leave the Fort Walton Beach area.
