The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a Crestview woman following a disturbing animal cruelty investigation involving dozens of neglected animals.
62 year old Karen Kroll is charged with 22 counts of Aggravated Animal Cruelty and 42 counts of Animal Cruelty after deputies uncovered severe and prolonged neglect at a property on Auburn Road.
The investigation began after an Emerald Coast Crime Stoppers tip about conditions at “Aussie and Me Animal Rescue.” When deputies were finally able to access the property, they found approximately 70 dogs, two donkeys, and a pig, many without adequate food or water and showing clear signs of neglect.
With the help of the Panhandle Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), a search warrant was executed March 25th and more than 70 animals were ultimately removed from the property.
Veterinary evaluations revealed heartbreaking conditions, including:
Animals infested with parasites, some having ingested foreign objects like leashes and collars
Dogs suffering from heartworm disease
Severe malnourishment and dehydration
Untreated injuries, infections, and chronic medical conditions
A donkey with painful hoof infections caused by prolonged exposure to unsanitary conditions
A veterinarian determined the animals had endured severe and prolonged neglect, resulting in significant and unnecessary suffering.
All animals are now receiving care and treatment.
This case is a reminder: if you suspect animal neglect or abuse, say something. Reporting concerns can save lives.
