A 20 year law enforcement veteran, Corporal John Jenks has spent most of that time in patrol. He is a subject matter expert on traffic enforcement and patrol operations. In August, Corporal Jenks responded to a shots fired call in progress. His experience and instinct lead him to choose a tactical, quiet approach. As he neared the home he could hear screams of fear echoing in the darkness. He was able to discern it was a victim, pleading for his life. Soon he was able to see the victim cowering on the front porch as the armed suspect stood over him. Corp. Jenks took a tactical position and verbally challenged the suspect. Surprised, the suspect then threw the gun to the ground and fled into the home. The suspect was arrested and the investigation revealed the suspect had threatened and beaten the victim and had fired five rounds as they struggled over the gun. Corporal Jenks may well have prevented a homicide that night.
He is a gifted trainer and is constantly passing his knowledge along to the next generation of officers. Many employees could give testimony on how Corp. Jenks has mentored them and developed them into productive, satisfied team members.
His leadership philosophy is to set the example and lead from the front. In addition to his daily leadership tasks, Corp. Jenks responded to 1,471 calls for service this year.
