A Fort Walton Beach woman was killed Tuesday night after she was hit by a tractor trailer truck in the eastbound lanes of Highway 98 in Mary Esther, about 150 feet east of Doolittle Boulevard.
The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of 29-year old Christine Monfils.
A witness says he saw a female leave a pickup truck she was riding in while the truck was traveling eastbound around 9 p.m. last night. He said the driver of the pickup came to an abrupt stop. The witness says the female was hit by the semi as she was on the ground on the roadway.
The driver of the tractor trailer was stopped about eight miles away in Destin and told deputies he was unaware he had struck a person.
Eastbound traffic on Highway 98 in the area was diverted to Hollywood Boulevard and remained closed from 9 p.m. last night until 3:15 a.m. this morning.
The investigation is continuing.
