The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office has charged a Destin man with placing a cell phone in a unisex business bathroom to record a patron.
38-year old Huy Doan, who goes by the name “Steve”, is charged with video voyeurism and battery causing bodily harm. The victim says she went to Rose Nails at 34940 Emerald Coast Parkway around one p.m. yesterday afternoon to get a pedicure. She told deputies when she asked to use the bathroom Doan told her it was the first door on the left and she went to pick out a nail color before heading to the restroom. She says Doan was exiting the bathroom as she went to go in but she did not hear a flushing sound or water running which she considered “odd”.
The victim says when she looked around the restroom she noticed a cell phone sitting in a custom made cardboard holder held together with black tape propped in plumbing under the sink facing the toilet. She took out her smart phone and took two photos of what she observed. The phone’s light was on indicating it was recording. The victim took the phone from under the sink, put it in her purse, walked out of the business and called 9-1-1. While calling the OCSO, Doan approached and said, “I’m sorry. It was a mistake, I have a family. I was working on the pipes.”
He followed the victim around the parking lot as she tried to get away from him. He then attacked her, placing a hand around her neck to hold her down while he pulled items out of her purse. Once he had the phone, she says Doan walked away and was seen manipulating the phone’s controls. A witness who saw the struggle stayed with the victim until deputies arrived. The witness told deputies before they go on scene Doan walked back up to the victim and the witness told him to walk away.
