Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office deputies caught a burglar in the act around 4:30 yesterday morning after responding to a call of a break-in in progress on Amhurst Circle in Destin. The homeowners were alerted by their growling dog and movement on the first floor of their residence. Deputies arriving on scene spotted two men running in opposite directions from the backyard.
After a brief foot pursuit one of the subjects, 26-year old Benjamin De Jesus Gutierrez of Atlanta, was taken into custody. Stolen property from the residence was found in his pockets.
The second subject fled into the neighborhood of Emerald Lakes. Niceville Police Department’s K-9 unit arrived on scene to assist with a track for the second subject, which subsequently ended on the golf course where the track was lost.
We would like to thank the Niceville Police Department’s K-9 Unit for their assistance!
Anyone who has surveillance video is asked to review camera footage which may have captured the subjects in the area between 3:00AM and 4:30AM Wednesday May 19th.
Other vehicle burglaries in the area were reported soon after the incident.
Gutierrez is charged with burglary to an occupied dwelling, resisting without violence and petit theft.
