Two women were arrested following a dangerous incident early this morning on Highway 98 in Destin that began as a domestic disturbance and escalated into multiple criminal offenses.

Around midnight an OCSO deputy spotted a vehicle stopped in traffic near Airport Road and Highway 98 East while the two women were involved in a verbal altercation.

One of the women got out of the vehicle and began walking away onto the sidewalk.

The driver, identified as 29-year old Sonia Chaires of Houston, then made a U-turn, drove onto the sidewalk, and attempted to strike the other woman with the vehicle before taking off.

Deputies stopped her a short time later and began a roadside DUI investigation.

They observed signs of impairment and located open containers of alcohol inside the Jeep.

Chaires is now charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and DUI.

During the investigation, the victim, 38-year old Graciela Sanchez Granados repeatedly refused lawful commands to stay away from the vehicle during the inventory and tow process. At one point she grabbed a deputy by the should and tried to pull him away from the car.

Granados is charged with battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting an officer without violence.

Both were transported to the Okaloosa County Jail in Crestview.
