The Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission and an Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit have located the bulk of the wreckage of a 414LLC Twin Cessna that crashed last night off the Destin coast, killing the pilot.
An FWC helicopter was able to spot a sheen in the Gulf of Mexico about a mile south of Destin. Marine units and Sea Tow divers responded to that location and found most of the plane on the sea floor in about 55 feet of water around 2:15 p.m.
The 63-year old pilot, Al Habetz of Crowley Louisiana, died when the plane went down around 8:30 p.m., shortly after taking off Tuesday evening from the Destin Airport. His body was recovered last night by members of the Destin Coast Guard.
The investigation is being handled by the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board.
The OCSO wants to thank all the first responders and other organizations that took part in the operation.
