Escaped Inmate Apprehended

An Okaloosa County inmate is now in the custody of the Putnam County Sheriff's Office after he fled from the Okaloosa County Jail in Crestview on Monday, November 7th.  Michael William Herndon, age 36 (01-29-1969), was observed by Putnam County Deputies driving recklessly on State Road 20 westbound around 6:45 pm Wednesday evening.  Herndon refused to stop after being directed by law enforcement and attempted to elude.

After approximately two miles, Herndon pulled over and provided a false name to deputies.  A check was run on the vehicle, which indicated it was stolen out of Crestview , FL.   A search of the vehicle revealed a small handgun in the center console and a bottle of prescription drugs.  Herndon was arrested on the following charges: attempting to flee or elude, reckless driving, possession of a controlled substance, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, and grand theft of a motor vehicle.  Herndon was booked and transported to the Putnam County Jail.
