Motorists should anticipate significant daytime travel delays on US Highway 98 between Fort Walton Beach and Destin for the next three days. A high volume of vehicular traffic, plus a temporary pedestrian crosswalk for citizens visiting a boat show on Okaloosa Island have combined to produce traffic back-ups both eastbound and westbound.
Today (Thursday), the first day of the boat show, the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office received reports of 45 minute driving times for the four-mile distance between the Brooks Bridge and Destin Bridge during the afternoon. The potential for similar traffic slowdown will exist until approximately dusk on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Motorists may consider planning their travel on Highway 98 between Destin and Fort Walton Beach for non-peak traffic times; or re-routing their travel via the Mid-Bay Bridge.
