Okaloosa County Sheriff Charlie Morris is searching for any living descendants or close relatives of former Okaloosa County Sheriff J.M. Summerlin, who died shortly after taking office in January, 1921.
Sheriff Summerlin, killed when his patrol car was struck by a train at a railroad crossing in Crestview, is the only known line-of-duty death in the 87 year history of the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office.
The Florida Sheriff's Association is dedicating a Memorial honoring Sheriff's personnel who died in the line of duty. A Dedication ceremony is planned for September 18 in Tallahassee.
Sheriff Morris is also seeking any photographs of the early Sheriffs of Okaloosa County, as well as any related historical information.
Individuals who can assist may contact Lee Garrett at (850) 609-3046.
