Inspector Brian Shonk of the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office has been honored by the Florida Retail Federation as one of four finalists for its 2002 Law Enforcement Officer of the Year award. Other finalists were from the Boca Raton Police Services Department, the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office, and the Fort Pierce Field Off of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Officer Orlando Merced of the Miami Police Department was named the FRF Officer of the Year.

Inspector Shonk has served in several capacities during his seven years with the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office, including uniformed patrol, traffic enforcement, investigations, and currently, Professional Standards and Training. He was recently promoted from Investigator to Inspector.

During the past year, Investigator Shonk was credited with solving a Bank Robbery and several residential and vehicle burglaries. He is also a certified child safety seat inspector, and has been active in promoting child traffic safety.
