The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a teenage spring break visitor who fell at least nine stories while balcony-climbing last evening (Monday evening). The death of James David Nash, Jr., age 18 (1-14-83), of 1724 Bull Run, SW, Lilburn, Georgia, was an apparent accident.

Nash was at a party in a unit on the 12th floor of the Pelican Beach Resort, 1002 East US Highway 98, Destin, when witnesses say he climbed over the balcony railing in an apparent attempt to evade hotel security when security officers visited the scene of the party.

According to witnesses, Nash climbed down approximately two levels before losing his grip and falling the rest of  the way down the beach-front side of the building, landing on sand. He was dead at the scene. The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office was called at 9:17 Monday evening.

Nash was with a group taking a "senior trip" from Brookwood High School of Snellville, Georgia. He and several friends had walked to the Pelican Beach Resort from another lodging establishment where they were staying.

Alcohol is considered to have been a factor in the incident.
