A suspect is in custody after two pre-dawn burglaries in the Crystal Beach area of Destin this morning (Tuesday morning). The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office apprehended Shea Michael New, age 27 (11-5-73), of 402 Olde Post Road, Niceville, after a brief pursuit.

Deputies were called to a rented cottage on Crystal Beach Drive a few minutes after 4:00 this morning (Tuesday morning), in time to pursue the suspect as he left in a red pickup truck. Descriptions of both the suspect and the vehicle matched those provided by a citizen alerted by his car alarm less than half an hour earlier in the same neighborhood.

Deputy Daryl Culberson stopped and arrested New on Scenic Highway 98 near the Okaloosa-Walton County line. New is charged with one count of Burglary to an Occupied Dwelling; additional charges may be pending as the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office investigates other recent vehicle and residential burglaries in the area.

Deputy George Davis, en route to assist Deputy Culberson, received minor injuries when his patrol car lost control and spun out on Scenic Highway 98 at a curve just east of James Lee Park. Davis was treated and released from Fort Walton Beach Medical Center; the 1998 Ford he was driving struck a guard rail.
