The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office is investigating a one-car traffic crash in Destin that resulted in the death of a teenager late last night (Saturday night).

Dead at the scene was Jacolby Antonio Morris, age 16 (9-3-1986), of 106 Ed Brown Street, Fort Walton Beach. Morris was the passenger in a 2002 Lexus driven by Thomas Edward Cottone, Jr., age 16 (12-3-1985), of 3993 Indian Trail, Destin. Cottone was airlifted from the scene to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola; his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Cottone apparently lost control of his car a few minutes before 11:00 Saturday night and ran into a tree in front of a house in the 700 Block of Spring Lake Drive, on a curve near the south end of that street. Spring Lake Drive is a residential street with a speed limit of 25 Miles per Hour.

Circumstances of the incident remain under investigation; excessive speed appears to be a factor. Neither teen was wearing his seat belt at the time of the impact. The driver and passenger were both students at Fort Walton Beach High School.
