The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office has responded several times today, along with other emergency services, to reports of suspicious mail or other suspicious events or activity. Citizens are encouraged to promptly report anything they consider suspicious.
While most, if not all, such occurrences will prove to be benign or unfounded, each is being treated as a potentially serious event. Citizens observing emergency vehicles and personnel should not panic or over-react. Many unfounded rumors have been reported this afternoon (Friday afternoon). One such rumor was of a hazardous materials incident or bio-hazard threat at Crestview High School. That rumor is totally false, as are the other rumors .
Some of the events may have been intended as pranks. In such cases, the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office and other law enforcement agencies will attempt to identify the pranksters for possible criminal prosecution. Anybody with information about any pranks or hoaxes that prey on concerns of public safety should contact the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office at 651-7400 or 689-5705 or Emerald Coast Crime Stoppers at 863-TIPS (863-8477).
