The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office is investigating a single-car crash that was responsible for serious injuries to the driver involved, and resulted in a major traffic jam on a busy section of U.S. Highway 98 today (Thursday).

The driver, Misty Celeste Pollard, age 24 (8-10-76), of 611 E. Robinson Avenue, Crestview, was trapped inside her 1995 Ford Probe after the vehicle crashed into a tree on the north side of Highway 98, just inside the Mary Esther city limits, at approximately 11:25 this morning. Transported by Life Flight Helicopter, Pollard is listed in serious condition at Baptist Hospital in Pensacola.

Pollard was eastbound, approaching Mary Esther, when her car ran off the south side of the road in front of Hurlburt Field. Investigating Deputies believe the driver over-corrected, sending the vehicle across both eastbound lanes, through the median, across both westbound lanes, and off the road on the north side as the highway as the road entered the city of Mary Esther. The car, which was briefly airborne at least twice during the incident, came to rest against a tree approximately 30 feet off the roadway.

Preliminary indications are that the driver, alone in the vehicle at the time, was not wearing a seat belt. Excessive speed may have been a factor in the crash.

The investigation is continuing; charges are pending.
