An alert citizen is responsible for the arrest of three teenage vandals at a local golf course. A resident of the Shalimar Pointe area called the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office a few minutes after 2:00 AM on Thursday morning (July 25) to report three boys joy-riding golf carts across the greens.

The suspects fled on foot as Deputies arrived, but were unable to return to their car, which Deputies had located and kept under surveillance. The vehicle helped Deputies Bill Schinstine, Jim Hoisington, and Melinda Taylor identify the suspects, who were later brought to the Sheriff's Office by their parents.

Arrested on charges of Grand Theft and Felony Criminal Mischief were Steve J. Fish and Michael S. Withrow of Shalimar, and Matthew T. Thompson of Fort Walton Beach. All three defendants are 16 years old. Officials of the Shalimar Pointe Golf and Country Club estimate damages to greens and the carts at more than $3,000.

Theft of golf carts and criminal mischief to greens has been a recurring problem at several area golf courses this summer. Okaloosa County Sheriff Charlie Morris urges citizens to be alert for, and immediate report, any suspicious activity.
