Many residents of Okaloosa County will soon be receiving fund-raising letters signed by Sheriff Charlie Morris on behalf of the Florida Sheriff's Association. This annual direct-mail campaign is a bonafide, legitimate effort of the Florida Sheriff's Association.
Sheriff Morris emphasizes the FSA does not ever use telemarketing or any form of telephone solicitation.
Other organizations with similar names do employ telephone solicitors, leading to confusion on the part of some citizens.
"Some well-intentioned citizens believe the Sheriff's Office or some other law enforcement agency or the Florida Sheriff's Association has called them on the telephone requesting a donation," said Sheriff Morris. "That is never the case."
The Florida Sheriff's Association uses the US Mail for all of its appeals, and never sells its membership lists to other organizations. It has never used telemarketing in any form in its 110-year history, and is on record as strongly opposed to that form of fund-raising and membership solicitation.
