An arrest has been made in the murder of Rhonda Kimmons Chaney of Fort Walton Beach. Held without bond in the Okaloosa County Jail is Raymond James Dunn, age 40 (12-2-60), of Fort Walton Beach. Dunn was arrested at approximately 2:00 o'clock this morning (Friday morning) after Okaloosa County Sheriff's Investigators Robert Grappone and Tony Wasden obtained a signed warrant on an open count of Murder.
A room recently rented by Dunn at the Dolphin Inn Motel in downtown Fort Walton Beach was processed for evidence late last night (Thursday night), with blood stains and splatters detected. The bedspread and shower curtain were missing from Dunn's room when he vacated the room; a witness had reported seeing Dunn dispose of a bloody bedspread. Witnesses also placed Dunn in possession of the victim's white Chevrolet, and reported he had given away that car, saying he no longer needed it.
The investigation also determined victim Chaney had recently benefited from a large monetary settlement. Dunn admitted he received cash by wire, but denied knowing the victim or driving her car.
The victim's body was found in the woods off F I M Boulevard in the Wright area, north of Fort Walton Beach, last Saturday evening (August 25). An autopsy revealed major head wounds, likely inflicted by blunt force.
