Okaloosa County Sheriff Charlie Morris reminds all citizens that some unscrupulous individuals are attempting to take advantage of current events.

A bogus charity collector was reported today (Friday) in the Bluewater Bay area. At least one customer encountered a woman standing outside the main entrance to the Winn Dixie store at 4512 East State Road 20. The woman, described as wearing a blue shirt and blue shorts, with short brown hair, solicited a donation for the Red Cross. The customer alerted store personnel, who said that no charity groups had asked permission to solicit. A store employee confronted the woman, who stated she had identification in her car. When she reached her car, however, she drove off. The vehicle was described as a small red two door.

Sheriff Morris urges all citizens to be cautious in all dealings with charity solicitors. Citizens approached in person should request identification. Solicitors operating at shopping centers and other business locations should have prior permission from the management of the property. Many telephone solicitors are for-profit salesmen working on a commission basis.
