A 48 year old man is the apparent victim of drowning in the Gulf of Mexico this morning (Wednesday morning) in Destin. Michael Eugene Jones of Los Alamos, New Mexico, was pronounced dead at Twin Cities Hospital in Niceville after he was transported by Okaloosa Emergency Medical Services from Henderson Beach State Park in Destin.
Jones and his 13 year old son, Phillip, were swimming in the Gulf of Mexico, approximately 50 feet from shore when they encountered trouble in rough water. Several citizens attempted to aid the pair; Chris Ramey, age 34, of Meridian, Mississippi, successfully pulled the younger Jones to the beach. When Michael Jones was pulled ashore, he was reported unconscious and not breathing. Bystanders, including a physician from Georgia, performed CPR until the arrival of emergency crews.
The incident was reported at 11:19 this morning. It is the first beach drowning of the year in Okaloosa County.
