Okaloosa County Sheriff Charlie Morris credits effective security measures at Fort Walton Beach Medical Center with foiling the attempted abduction of a newborn baby last night (Monday night).

Deputies, alerted immediately by the hospital at 8:49 last night (Monday night), found the suspect within eight minutes of the incident, walking in the area of the Medical Center. Taken into custody without incident and later arrested on a charge of False Imprisonment of a Child was Kavita Barvett Crayton, age 20 (7-18-81), of 68 Ed Brown Street, Fort Walton Beach. Investigators learned Crayton had recently lost a baby to miscarriage, and had made statements that she wanted a baby to show to her boyfriend.

According to an investigation by the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office, Crayton had been visiting at the Maternity Unit of the hospital, and had befriended the mother of a newborn girl. At one point, when the mother was in the bathroom, an alarm sounded. The mother exited the bathroom in time to confront Crayton apparently in the process of walking out of the room with the baby; Crayton then left the baby behind and exited the area.

The alarm had been activated when a tamper-proof leg band was removed from the infant.
