DNA evidence has linked a single suspect to two sexual attacks in the Wright area of south Okaloosa County last summer.

The suspect, James Deerfield Cook II, age 19 (4-17-1984), was arrested this morning (Monday morning) at the Okaloosa County Courthouse Annex in Shalimar, where he was awaiting a court appearance on unrelated charges. Cook, whose most recent home address was on Barks drive, Fort Walton Beach, has been in custody for approximately on month on charges including Auto Theft, Burglary, and Violation of Probation.

Cook is charged with the Kidnaping and Sexual Attack of a woman who was abducted at gunpoint as she walked along Hurlburt Field Road in the pre dawn hours of July 20, 2002; and with the attack on a young woman in her home in the Wright area late in the evening of September 19, 2002. He is also charged with Burglarizing a home in the Ocean City area and stealing a red SUV used in the first sexual attack.

After a continuing investigation by the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), DNA evidence linked the two cases. Cook was developed as a suspect, then linked by DNA to both incidents.
