A teenager who had twice escaped from custody has been recaptured in north Okaloosa County. Deputy Charlie Bozeman recognized Jerry Wayne Cleckler, Jr. as a passenger in a vehicle he stopped on Highway 90-East late last night (Wednesday night). Cleckler jumped through an open car window with one wrist in handcuffs, pulling Deputy Bozeman in an attempt to escape into a wooded area. Deputy Bozeman incurred cuts to his hand and fingers as he successfully regained control of Cleckler.
Cleckler, age 17 (2-10-84), was arrested on charges of Resisting an Officer with Violence, Escape, and misdemeanor possession of marijuana. He is also held as a Fugitive from Justice on a Escape charge in Texas. He had escaped from custody in that state after a burglary arrest.
On August 14, Cleckler had escaped from the Okaloosa County Sheriff's North District Office in Crestview while being processed on the Texas charge.
During the investigation of that escape, Deputies contacted Christopher E. Carroll, age 18 (4-10-83) of 163 West Walnut Avenue, Crestview as a likely associate of Cleckler. Carroll was advised that he could be arrested if he harbored or assisted an escapee. Carroll, who was the driver of the car in which Cleckler was riding last night, was arrested on a Felony charge of Harboring, Concealing, or Aiding an Escaped Prisoner.
