As the result of new information developed today (Wednesday), the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office has closed as "unfounded" its investigation into complaints of a possible charity scam. A solicitor from south Florida, operating in recent days in Okaloosa County, was in fact legally contracted by the VFW organization at the state level to conduct fund-raising.

Several citizens had reported to the Sheriff's Office and to the local VFW that they had been contacted by telephone by a fund-raiser who followed up with a personal visit to collect the checks.

Although the calls and visits were done without direct involvement of local VFW Post 7674 in fort Walton Beach, the activity is not in violation of any laws. The fund-raising visits and calls were conducted by an agent of a private, for-profit company that contracts with various charitable organizations to generate funds.
