An investigation that began with the death of a pregnant 14 year old two months ago has resulted in the arrest of the prospective father of her child.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office arrested Eric Shawn Alexander, age 19 (4-21-82), late this afternoon (Tuesday afternoon), after a warrant was signed on a charge of Lewd and Lascivious Acts on a Child Under the Age of 16.

The investigation began on March 19, when the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office, and Okaloosa Emergency Medical Services were summoned to Alexander's residence of 60 Brenda Lane, Mary Esther, where a 14 year old girl had died of pregnancy-related medical complications in the eighth month of her pregnancy. The baby, delivered by Okaloosa Paramedics by emergency C-section, died the next day.

An investigation into the circumstances of the death revealed Alexander was the father of the child, and he and the teenage mother resided together. At the time the baby was conceived, Alexander was 18 and the girl was 13.

A warrant was submitted after DNA test results confirmed the findings of the investigation.

Under Florida Law, sexual activity with a person under the age of 16 is a Second Degree Felony, punishable by a maximum of 15 years in prison. Neither the victim's consent nor lack of chastity nor ignorance of the victim's age are allowed as defenses under state law.
