Okaloosa County Sheriff Charlie Morris is honoring Deputy Laura Yanna and Crime Prevention Officer Jennifer Schinstine as his Employees of the Quarter for the third quarter of 2001.
Deputy Yanna, who has been with the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office almost four years, was recognized for the many hours of her own time spent in investigating a recent dog fighting case. Her "attention to detail and tenacity" in assisting the Panhandle Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) has resulted in two felony Cruelty to Animal arrests so far, with additional arrests possible. Deputy Yanna'a supervisor describes her as "compassionate... fair, but firm... an example of the professional image the Sheriff's Offfice promotes."
Crime Prevention Officer Schinstine has been extremely active since joining the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office in October, 1999. She has earned the distinction of Certified Crime Prevention Practitioner, and has revitalized the "Neighborhood Watch" program. She teaches the NRA "Eddie Eagle" gun safety program to elementary-age children, trains bank and retail employees with mock robberies, and serves as director of the Sheriff's Citizen Academy. Schinstine is extremely active with Emerald Coast Crime Stoppers, and has recently been elected to represent Northwest Florida as a board member of the Florida Crime Prevention Association. Her supervisor describes her as "tireless..." with an "above and beyond" attitude. Schinstine is also a part-time Deputy, in addition to her full-time Crime Prevention Officer position.
