Memorial Day Weekend Safety

With Memorial Day approaching, safety on our roads and waterways is always a major priority for Okaloosa County Sheriff Charlie Morris .  To insure motorist and boating safety, the Marine Unit, Traffic Enforcement Unit and deputies will be alert for violators.  The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Enforcement Unit will continue the “Click it or Ticket” campaign throughout the holiday weekend to June 5th.  Deputies will be alert for seat belt and child restraint usage, as well as aggressive driving violations.  The Marine Unit and Beach Patrol deputies will render assistance or enforcement wherever it is needed.  Citizens will see two vessels patrolling the waterways as well as two Yamaha waverunners on loan from Honda Yamaha of Fort Walton Beach .

The following are statistics from Memorial Day weekend 2004:

                        Traffic Crashes = 94

                        Traffic Crash DUI’s = 8

                        Marine Violations = 2

The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office encourages residents and visitors to have fun, but be safe and responsible.  Citizens who observe threats to public safety should contact law enforcement immediately by dialing *FHP, *DUI, or by calling the 24-hour non-emergency number for the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office at 651-7400 or 689-5705.
