The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office is offering gun safety locks, free of charge. The locks were provided through Project ChildSafe, a program developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, and funded by a grant from the U.S. Justice Department and the firearms industry.

The key-operated padlocks with a 15-inch metal-sheathed cable can secure pistols, revolvers, and most rifles and shotguns. Each lock is accompanied by a 15-page instruction book and firearm safety guide.

Florida law requires firearms to be locked or otherwise safely stored to prevent unauthorized access by children. (F.S. 790.174 and F.S. 784.05(3)).

The locks will remain available as long as supplies last at these facilities of the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office:

Courthouse Annex, 1250 N. Eglin Pkwy., Shalimar

Administration Building, 50 Second Street, Shalimar

North District Office, 296 Brackin Avenue, Crestview

Destin District Office, 107 Stahlman Avenue, Destin

Santa Rosa Mall (Sheriff's Substation)

The locks are also available at The Martial Arts Academy, 42 Garnett Avenue, Fort Walton Beach.
