Like middle and high school students
in Okaloosa County, college students in our county also have "school
resource officers". The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office has
teamed up with Okaloosa-Walton Community College to make their college campus a
safe one to attend. The Okaloosa-Walton Community College and University of West
Florida campus in Fort Walton Beach has two full-time deputies providing law
enforcement and security services on campus. This partnership began in 1993 and has proven to be extremely successful over the years. Instead
of hiring Okaloosa County deputies for part-time security work, the college
determined they wanted deputies patrolling the campus on a regular basis.
Deputies Bud Corbett and Jose Cintron work full-time on the college campus.

The number one priority of the OWCC/UWF deputies is student and faculty safety. The deputies are on campus to make sure that both students and teachers are safe throughout the day and night during classes. If an emergency should arise on campus, a student or faculty member can pick up any campus phone and dial 535. This call pages the deputy so he can render assistance as quickly as possible. The deputies handle a variety calls each day and deal with everything from parking problems to faculty or student threats. Like most deputies who work for the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office, the OWCC/UWF deputies are also a great source of information for students. The deputies constantly interact with students and faculty of the college to ensure a positive presence. To learn more about the OWCC/UWF deputies call the Sheriff's Office at (850) 651-7410.
