We want to warn the public that a scam is currently circulating in our area that involves criminals impersonating law enforcement officers.

The OCSO has had at least two complaints this week involving citizens being contacted by people posing as deputies.

In the typical scenario, the scammer calls or emails someone and says they missed a court date or had a warrant for their arrest, and must send money via prepaid cards to have the charges dismissed.

A Crestview woman who was called and emailed January 12th says she did not provide any personal information but did give them the numbers from two prepaid Money Pak cards to the tune of $700. She had been told the money would be refunded by the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office once the charges were dropped.

Please help us spread the word since awareness and prevention are our biggest allies in preventing local residents from being victimized by these con artists.
