The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office is conducting a death investigation after the body of a missing mentally challenged Laurel Hill man was found in a retention pond behind a Destin apartment complex this morning.

A resident at 4231 West Commons Drive contacted law enforcement around 7 a.m. after he noticed something in the water from off his balcony.

Deputies found a man face down in the retention pond.

The victim has been tentatively identified as 40-year old Adam Vaughn. Vaughn had been reported missing around 10:30 Thursday night by a caretaker from his group home. He said Vaughn had gone to the restroom at Morgan’s Sports Complex but didn’t return.

He also said Vaughn, who could not be located, was unable to drive, read, or know his address.

Investigators say there were no initial indications of foul play. The Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
