The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office has partnered with the City of Destin and the Florida Department of Transportation to obtain a $50,000 grant for enhanced DUI enforcement within the Destin City limits. This program will be called the “Drive Sober in Destin” Campaign and run through September.

The Campaign will utilize an increase in manpower by deputies who have received advanced DUI enforcement training. Deputies will use focused patrols, saturation patrols, and low manpower check points in order to detect and arrest impaired drivers. In addition to DUI enforcement, deputies will focus on speeding, underage drinking when driving, occupant restraint devices, aggressive driving and open alcohol container violations.

Although Destin has a permanent population of approximately 12,000 residents, during summer months an influx of tourists can cause the population to swell to 60,000 or more.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office would like to take this opportunity to remind motorists that “buzzed” driving is drunk driving. Before you leave for a party or a night on the town that may involve alcohol, plan a safe ride home.
