The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office is requesting retailers check their money carefully. During the second week of July 2016, two area retailers reported counterfeit $100 bills passed at their stores. In addition, counterfeit $20 bills were seized from persons arrested by the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office earlier this month in an unrelated offense.

The OCSO asks that retailers who suspect a person is passing counterfeit money at their establishments place the counterfeit money in a separate location from other cash and contact Law Enforcement.

If any retailers need guidance on design features of real money, go to the U.S. Currency website at https://uscurrency.gov for guidance. Sheriff’s Office Financial/Economic Crimes investigators offer training presentations to retailers and their employees on how to detect potential counterfeit money.

Passing or possession of counterfeit currency is a Felony in the State of Florida. Counterfeiting currency is also investigated by the U.S. Secret Service and can be potentially be prosecuted by the Federal United States District Attorney’s office.
