Have
you ever been a victim of a crime? Do you know someone who has? Could that crime
have been prevented? Probably! The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office offers a
wide variety of crime prevention training classes where you are instructed on
crime prevention tips for your personal safety and home environment. Our Crime Prevention
Practitioner can help employers and employees, friends, neighbors and family
members discover new ways to avoid crime instead of reacting to it after it happens. Not only do criminals invade your work environment, they also come to
your home. The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office offers residential
security surveys to help you find the places where your home is vulnerable
before the burglar does. Neighborhood Watch Programs are a proven way to detect
crime in your neighborhood. We can't prevent all crime but we can make
life extremely difficult for criminals.

How do I start a Neighborhood Watch in my area?
Another way of preventing crime and helping deter it is to be involved in an active Neighborhood Watch Program. Neighborhood Watch was created to obtain citizen involvement in discouraging and preventing residential crime. The program uses citizen involvement to secure their own homes and personal property and to report any suspicious activity to the police. Neighborhood Watch operates to educate participants in the principles of deterrence, delay, and detection. The program depends upon a communication network organized with three levels of participants-- the residents, block captain coordinators, and the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office. Vigilante actions are in no way condoned. No one is asked to take a personal risk or be a hero. Since its creation about ten years ago, Neighborhood Watch has brought a dramatic drop in the local residential crime rate. If you would like information on our Neighborhood Watch Program or would like to start one in your neighborhood, please call Kathleen Larney at (850) 609-2005 or Ashley Barrineau at (850) 651-7513.
The Sheriff's Office also offers free residential and commercial security surveys. These surveys are confidential and give the homeowner and business owner a new way of detecting potential weak areas that the burglar might use to their advantage. The surveys cover the landscaping, lighting, locks, and a number of other items.
Be prepared; get the knowledge you need to fight back! For more information on Crime Prevention contact Kathleen Larney at (850) 609-2005 or Ashley Barrineau at (850) 651-7153.
SECURITY SURVEY FOR YOUR HOME

Look at your home through a burglar's eyes. Does it look like an easy target? Are there obvious security weaknesses?
Shrubbery should not obscure windows and doors. Make sure to trim the growth so that a burglar cannot work behind or below them undetected.
At night leave a few lights burning outside your home. Lights over doorways and garages, and strategically placed floodlights will make your home less inviting to a burglar.
Windows and doors should be securely locked. Inadequate locks should be replaced or supplemented.
Make your home look occupied at all times.
It is easy to identify most security weaknesses around your home. To supplement your survey and for more complicated security problems, contact the our Crime Prevention Specialist, Kathleen Larney at 609-2005 and ask about a free home security survey. At your request we will survey your home and give you cost effective security recommendations.
