IF YOU RECEIVE A SUSPICIOUS PACKAGE....

If you receive suspicious mail, (opened or unopened packages with or return address or strange return addresses) dispatchers will instruct you to place the package in a Ziploc bag with 1 part bleach and 9 parts of water and soak the envelope, then seal the bag and dispose of it in an outside trash container.

Calls received for suspicious mail containing substances will be instructed to follow the procedures listed below:

1. Determine if the individual(s) exposed are having any medical problems and if so the call will be forwarded to EMS.

2. Special operations unit, local fire and law enforcement will be dispatched to the location of the incident.

3. The letter or package should be left where it is and  on one else should touch it.

4. All people in the area of the letter or package should leave the area. If the area can be secured, close and lock the door. If you cannot lock the door, or there are multiple access points, monitor the access points so no one else enters the area.

5. The person who handles the package or letter should thoroughly wash their hands with soap and water. If the person the person who handles the package or letter got any of the substance on their clothing or other parts of their body, he/she should shower and place clothing in a sealed plastic bag.

6. If the person who handles the package or letter inhaled the substance or got it in their face, have them blow their nose ad save the tissue in a plastic bag.

7. Give the name and contact information of person(s) who had contact with the substance in the package/letter
